Research Topic- The Freedom to Express with New Media: How Greatly Unreliable Information on Elections Impacts Voter Opinion

I will be researching how new media sources have expanded the realm of unreliable information related to elections. I will analyze data on how voter opinion is influenced by different sources such as Twitter, political blogs, and social media sites. With the presence of social media sites, videos and posts about candidates and election data can be either straight up incorrect or skewed. However, tons of unreliable information is spread around at an uncanny rate now with the option to share posts on Facebook, retweet, like/unlike posts, and report through different social media sites and apps. I will be researching and gathering data on how voter opinion is influenced and if stats of voter opinion has been greatly changed since the presence of new media sources have been introduced. I will look at how the outcome elections can be predicted through social media usage as well.

Social networking sites

Twitter : Is a place to post your thoughts about anything as long as it’s 280 words or less. Like other forms of social media, twitter can be used just for social reasons but also for a way to market oneself. There are twitter accounts for news outlets that keep followers updated on current events with short tweets. There are important figures such as major scholars, business professionals, and government officials that use it as a way to express their view points or be more transparent about their goals to those who are interested. Twitter is a fast and easy way to get one’s thoughts across. It can be used as a tool to market oneself without having to make an entire profile page. It is a place to answer questions and start a very informal conversation. Like other social media sites there is the option to retweet which is essentially just sharing an idea. New Media sources such as YouTube foster creativity because it is a space where anyone can go on and speak their mind and be themselves on a platform for other people to see, post musical videos, post dance videos, etc. One interesting aspect of YouTube video’s comes with the idea of mash-ups. In the article, Disney Tolerates a Rap Parody of Its Critters. But Why?, it discusses how there have been instances of Disney characters rapping well known songs. These videos have a tremendous amount of views which actually helps Disney out. Who would think to ever have pooh bear wrapping on a song unless a source like YouTube was around. These creators love the idea that these videos are being viewed by people all over the world. They are their own type of artist. The major factor of mash-ups of interpretative videos is that they are not protected under copy right law, so creators are able to use their imagination and create videos as they please.
